For more than a century, the Cutrera family has been dedicated to the cultivation of olive trees and the production of extra virgin olive oil, a passion and love that binds them to their land. The company's origins can be traced back to 1906, when the Cutrera family was already engaged in the cultivation and care of olive trees in Chiaramonte Gulfi, a small village in southeastern Sicily.
In 1979, Giovanni Cutrera, the head of the family, founded the first oil mill with the help of his wife Maria, after growing up working in an old mill with millstones and presses operated by mules. Over the years, Giovanni's children - Maria, Giusy, and Salvatore - have joined their father in the family business.
In 1999, an important year for the future of Frantoi Cutrera, Giovanni, with the encouragement of the whole family, decided to open a second mill. The family and local producers were aware of the quality of the oil produced in the Iblei Mountains, so they decided to find a way to market it beyond the local market, a gamble that has paid off.
Since 2000, Cutrera has been managed by Maria, Giusy, and Salvatore with their spouses, and for some years now, the third generation has also begun to join the management of the family business. Looking ahead to the future, never forgetting the past, a good mix of tradition and innovation, this is the mission that allowed the family to obtain the important results achieved.
Even if the management of the company is in the hands of their three children, Giovanni and Maria have left a precious legacy made up of principles, values, and knowledge that each of the members of the company puts into practice in every action that is carried out on a daily basis. Frantoi Cutrera currently has two plants with three extraction lines.
Primo DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a top-quality monocultivar Sicilian EVOO obtained using only the early green harvest of the Tonda Iblea variety. Primo DOP is produced on the Monti Iblei, 350-400 meters above the sea level, from centuries-old D.O.P. certified olive tree groves. The olives are harvested by hand between mid-September and the end of October and they are cold pressed within 6 hours to create one of the most prized Extra Virgin Olive Oils in Italy.
Primo DOP presents a brilliant green color with golden reflections. The aroma is intense and rich, featuring a fabulous scent of green tomato and freshly mown grass, with a delicate note of fresh aromatic herbs and sweet almonds mid palate, typical of the Tonda Iblea olives variety. The smell is intensely fruity, with a distinctive note of tomato leaves and fresh aromatic herbs.
Primo DOP EVOO makes a superb complement to almost any dish, but is especially great for grilled meat, fish and seafood, roasted vegetables, soups, as well as drizzled raw on top of bruschetta, salads, caprese, and pasta dishes.
With more than 350 awards to their name, Frantoi Cutrera is the most awarded olive oil producer in Italy, with Primo DOP being one of the most awarded olive oils among their selection, with more than 150 awards won in 13 years. In 2022, Primo DOP Extra Virgin Olive Oil obtained the prestigious award as the "Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil PDO/PGI Medium Fruity" from the Flos Olei 2022 guide to the world of extra virgin olive oils.
